The 3 Day Military Diet Fab or Fad?

Dieting.

The very word gives most of us a feeling of absolute and utter dread.

‘No more pizza. Double the exercise. Nothing but water. Kale. Kill me now.’

In fairness I do 3 workouts a week, but I have my moments where I let it slip and indulge myself.
Happens to all of us right?
Holidays, birthdays, Christmas and rightly so being the hard working fitness enthuasist we are we deserve a little let up now and then right?

So while working hard but wanting to lose a quick couple pounds I decided against my better judgement to try a diet…

The diet I tried was called The 3 Day Military Diet it looks a little something like this:

3-day-diet

Day 1:

Breakfast:
Black coffee, 1/2 a grapefruit, 1 slice of dry wholemeal toast and 1 TBSP of peanut butter.

I was pretty pleased with this breakfast. It was filling and actually pretty tasty I was thinking that this whole diet was going to be a breeze.

Lunch:
Black coffee, 1/2 cup of cottage cheese (I cannot stand tuna!), 1 slice of dry wholemeal toast, 1 oz of cheddar cheese.

I was hungry by the time lunch rolled around, but I figured it was simply due to not snacking between meals (which I’m a real fan of) but after I ate (or rather wolfed down) lunch I was sated but just barely…

Dinner:
3 oz of chicken, 1 cup string beans, 1 cup carrots, 1 small apple, 1 cup vanilla ice cream.

When I saw my dinner on the plate I actually wanted to cry. It looked DEPRESSINGLY plain and oh so small… Dessert however was a much more pleasant experience (because who doesn’t LOVE ice cream?) I was sated for a while but definitely had some hunger pangs by the time I was going to bed.

Day 2:

Breakfast:
Black coffee, 1 boiled egg, 1 slice of wholemeal toast, 1 banana.

By the time I woke up and had worked out I was RAVENOUS. I wolfed this down I felt okay for a little while after it but hunger was creeping in well before lunch.

Lunch:
Black coffee, 1 cup of cottage cheese, 5 saltine crackers.

Five saltine crackers are simply not enough for that much cottage cheese and as a result I ended up eating the cottage cheese with a spoon on its own. It was a miserable lunch and I was feeling hungry again shortly after.

Dinner:
2 beef franks, 1 cup broccoli, 1/2 cup carrots, 1/2 a banana, 1/2 a cup of vanilla ice cream.

I thought yesterdays measley portion of food was bad, but this, this was worse. It barely filled up a small saucer! I was tempted to give up at this point and order in some chinese food because I was getting hangry (anger which stems from hunger the struggle is real), but I put on my big girl panties and dealt with it. I wanted to know if this diet worked and I wasn’t about to let the previous days suffering be in vain. The one positive thing I found out from this meal is that banana and ice cream are divine together and worth eating outside of this awful diet.

Day 3:

Breakfast:
Black coffee, 5 saltine crackers, 1 oz of cheddar cheese, 1 small apple.

I once again woke up starving and tore through this like a lion through a wildebeest it barely made a dent in my hunger. My morale was very low by this point but I kept telling myself ‘It’s just one more day, you’ve been through two days of this you can do it!’.

Lunch:
Black coffee, 1 hard boiled egg, 1 slice of dry wholemeal toast.

I inhaled this meal so fast it barely registered with me that I’d even eaten at all. At this point I was just willing the day to end so I could eat normally again.

Dinner:
1 cup cottage cheese (the smell of tuna makes me physically wretch), 1 cup cauliflower, 1 cup carrots, 1/2 cup of vanilla ice cream.

This was probably the most depressing meal of them all. The low fat cottage cheese was tasteless, I overcooked the cauliflower so it was like mush and somehow the carrots were still too hard. I munched it down with a face on me that would make milk turn sour.

Even the half cup of ice cream didn’t make up for this one.

Results:

I lost 3 pound in 3 days…
Then promptly put it back on within a week despite eating healthily!

Conclusion:

As I suspected this is yet another crash diet that will work if you want to drop some water weight and appear less bloated for a special event like a wedding or a birthday. (If you think the suffering is worth it!)

The weight however will probably not stay off and you’ll end up back where you started except now you’ll have a new found dislike of plain boiled veg.

Would I recommend it? Definitely not.

Unfortunately in this case hard work does pay off if you want it to stay off and exercise definitely feels better than starving yourself!
